Assistant Planner
Township of Hillsborough

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

Under direction, performs routine professional planning work involved in the development of a master, functional or project plan which is primarily intended to guide government policy for the assurance of the orderly and coordinated development of municipal land areas. Does related work as required.

SALARY/UNION POSITION:

Grade 11 -per union contract
Available immediately

HOURS OF WORK:

8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, plus attendance at night meetings as required.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

• Surveys areas and gathers information on the people living there (income, employment, how may in each residence and their relationship).
• Organizes and prepares information and statistical data in factual reports.
• Prepares visual aids (charts, maps, power point presentations, etc.) to use in presenting information to the community.
• Performs preliminary analysis and prepares or assists in preparing reports on planning matters.
• Reviews, analyzes, interprets and transposes statistical data of various complexities into forms useful in the development and preparation of tables, charts and maps.
• Prepares maps representing existing and proposed land use and other data for submission of presentation to the State, County and Municipal Agencies.
• Aids with the work involved in developing local planning projects which involve the consideration of highway systems, railroads, airports, facilities, industrial and residential areas, water supplies and sewerage systems and population concentrations.
• Aids with the review of development proposals.
• Reviews Board of Adjustment applications and provides written critiques to the Board.
• Attends all Board of Adjustment meetings and otherwise serves the Board with research and written reports on various matters.
• Provides planning advice and attendance at the meetings of the Sustainable Hillsborough Committee, Sign Review Committee and the Architectural Design Standard Subcommittee, as appropriate.
• Prepares and submits planning grant applications.
• Reviews all zoning permit applications, makes appropriate interpretations based upon a thorough knowledge of the Township Code and issues or denies permits accordingly.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree including 21 semester hour credits in professional planning subjects such as the principals of land use planning, history of city planning, planning project design, planning law and administration.

Experience: One (1) year of experience in municipal, county, regional or state planning. NOTE: Possession of a Master’s Degree in Planning from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the experience requirement.

License: Valid New Jersey Driver’s License
