PRACTICE
EDAW’s origins date to 1939, when Garrett Eckbo and Edward Williams formed an informal partnership to practice landscape architecture, urban design, and planning. Eckbo, a leading proponent of modernist design, and Williams, a land planner, were among the first to recognize their disciplinary services as a means to reconnect people to place, in the years of technological, social, and industrial upheaval in the aftermath of World War II. By the close of the war, they had established a forward-thinking, collaborative practice with a reputation for producing outstanding work. Eckbo, Dean, Austin and Williams – the names from which EDAW is derived – incorporated in March of 1967. The collaborative practice was grown to incorporate environmental, economics, and resource management capabilities. Today, EDAW has grown to 25 offices and over 1000 staff worldwide.
PHILOSOPHY
Our firm is interested in significant work, not measured by size, but by relevance to a project’s impact on its community and setting. We apply our inter-disciplinary skills to the development of solutions to complex urban design and urban regeneration problems in a variety of urban situations where the normal cycles of urban change, mandate creative adaptations for new uses. EDAW’s urban design and regeneration specialists often take the lead in economic and program planning as well as physical and environmental design and implementation. Through the application of our professional skills, we strive to improve the quality of the relationship between people and their environment throughout the world.
